  New Exercise Bike with [possible] Screwy Meter Readings?

  My boyfriend and I recently got an exercise bike. We like it alright, though the resistance isn't THAT great.

  regardless, it has a pulse monitor on it. I saw that the first time i used it my pulse hit like 165.

  the 3rd time my pulse went to 230 something.
  my boyfriend used it and his did the same thing.

  We're questioning it's accuracy. My friend said that once your pulse hits a certain point you lose aerobic efficiency.

  My question is, does the bike sound like it's reading accurately?
  If it is, does that mean i'm losing aerobic efficiency?
  How do you avoid having your pulse rate go that high?
  is it dangerous to our health?
